Iran: Serious Domestic and Regional Challenges
Date: Tuesday 20 August 2024
Time: 14:00 - 15:00
Date: Tuesday 20 August | Location: Online Webinar | Time: 14:00 – 15:00 (UTC+1)
Two key developments require in-depth analysis to understand current and likely future events in Iran and the wider Middle East region:
- The country now has a new government that leans towards the reformist and moderate networks. President Masoud Pezeshkian — who took office on 28 July — has pledged to pursue a diplomatic engagement to put an end to the current international nuclear sanctions. He will, however, face major challenges from the hardliners including the Supreme Leader and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (ICRG).
- Meanwhile, Israel has opted to escalate the regional tensions by assassinating: Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, while he was staying in an Iranian government guest house in Tehran; and Hezbollah’s senior military commander, Fuad Shukr, in Beirut.
The webinar will therefore cover:
- Iran’s domestic politics
- Israel’s regional war
- Foreign relations including with new US president
- The risks and opportunities for multinational companies, and how to manage them
