Kenya’s ruling Jubilee alliance targets Ali Hassan Joho
Published on Wednesday 29 March 2017 Back to articlesThe opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition still has no agreed presidential candidate amidst speculation that Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement is insisting on putting himself forward. NASA leaders have managed to maintain a united front but doubts about their solidarity remain.
In the absence of a NASA front runner, the Jubilee party is targeting Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho. The Kenya Revenue Authority has frozen his bank accounts, and requested account records from his bank. This follows a public meeting in Mombasa County where President Kenyatta vowed that ‘we will teach him [Joho] a lesson.’
The objective is to stop NASA — in particular the Raila Odinga led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) — in the coastal counties. Governors from the coastal counties of: Kilifi; Kwale; Tana River; Mombasa; Taita-Taveta; and Lamu, pledged their support to Odinga through the Pwani Declaration, which is a pledge to work together under the ODM launched 26 March.
